In Science, Year 4 learnt all about how the digestive system works – by becoming parts of it themselves! In small groups, the children started by mushing up banana and biscuits in a bag to represent how our teeth break up food.

They then added water to act as saliva, helping to form a bolus, just like our tongues do before we swallow. Next, the food travelled down the oesophagus into the stomach, where we added orange juice to represent our stomach acid. After everything was well mixed, the mixture was squeezed through tights to show how the large intestine absorbs water. Finally, once most of the liquid was removed, they cut a small hole to complete the journey and created their very own model “poo”!

It was a hands-on (and slightly messy) way to explore how our amazing digestive system works, and Year 4 loved every minute of it!

As part of the British Science Week, Year 4 had so much fun experimenting with different musical instruments. They adapted how much energy they used to play the instruments to change how loud or quiet the sound was.

They explored the effect of vibrations and loudness by playing the instruments with lots and very little energy. They then worked scientifically to observe and measure the loudness of the sound in decibels using a data logger.

All our Year 4 Griffins were Go-For-It Gorillas and made the most of making as much noise as possible!

Over the past few weeks, Year 4 have been lucky enough to visit the capital to watch Disney’s The Lion King on stage at the Lyceum Theatre in the West End. The journey may have been long, but children’s behaviour was exemplary and staff enjoyed getting to know children more along the way.

Once we arrived in London, we took a walk to Covent Garden to watch the street performers and then headed to the theatre where we climbed 87 steps to be precise (not that the children counted!) up to the Grand Circle to find our seats. The children were all in awe of the show, the costumes, the singing, the acting, it was clear they loved every minute. For the staff, it was the look on children’s faces that made it, it’s that alone that makes the long days worthwhile.

Our Year 4 Griffins did 鶹ý proud – with members of the public watching the show complementing our pupils. Thank you Year 4, we hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did!

Our Year 4 Griffins have enjoyed a visit from the Fire service this week. Fire fighters from our local fire station stopped by to deliver a ‘Sparks’ workshop to develop the children’s understanding of fire and road safety.

Both classes developed their knowledge and answered lots of questions. Pupils also had the opportunity to quiz the fire fighters about their roles and how important their job is to the community.

Last week, our Year 4 Griffins entered a Multiplication Check Cup on Emile as part of their practise ready for their Official Year 4 Multiplication Check this week! Miss Badlan and Mrs. Simpson were so impressed with their revision up until now which led to us WINNING the regional competition. Out of 400 schools, we were one of 30 who made it through to the national final.

Our Year 4 pupils were so proud to go through as winner and put everything they had into the final. All our hard work meant we answered 24, 699 correct times table questions over the day bringing us in, in 13th Place.

The determination and perseverance our pupils showed throughout the day was fantastic, we are so unbelievably proud of them and can’t wait to see them shine in their Statutory Multiplication Check – you’ll all be amazing!!

Well done, Year 4!

During the first STEM Club afterschool session of the Summer Term, our super scientists in Years 4 & 5 used their engineering and teamwork skills to construct spaghetti structures with optimal strength, stability and durability.

Our Griffins had great fun when constructing their terrific towers!

Our Year 4 Griffins were wowed and hooked into their new topic by completing a Viking themed Escape Room! The scene was set, our Vikings were on a ship crossing the seas ready to invade the next country. Unfortunately, the journey had taken far longer than expected so food was rationed, thinking ahead, our little Vikings had cleverly locked away some of their previous food in case the situation got even worse, which it of course did!! They had fallen ill, and with food now non-existent on the ship, it’s a race against time to get to the hidden food! Unfortunately, they were so poorly they couldn’t remember the combination to the lock!

Children had to work in groups to read some information about Vikings, answer some trivia questions and solve puzzles to crack the code! We were so impressed with our Go-for-it Gorillas who were Persevering Parrots and Slinky-Linky Snakes all in one! 5 teams managed to escape and survive the perilous journey across the seas, whilst the rest of the groups you may still find in the North Sea somewhere!!

We had such a fun afternoon, and it was so lovely to see our pupils learning in a different way, enthusiastic about what they’re learning and working collaboratively together to solve problems – you can say we’re all very excited to learn more about the Vikings over the next term!

On Wednesday 6th December, our Year 3 and 4 Griffins took part in a football competition at Perry Wood, where 鶹ý, Chivenor, and Perry Wood themselves showcased their young talent. Both boys and girls teams from each school participated, creating a great platform for the students to display their skills and love for the game.
鶹ý boys won their tournament by working well together and showing skill and determination. They played smart and celebrated their win with lots of energy, proving they were not just good individually, but also as a team. As a result of their win, the boys have now qualified to play at the GST national finals at Oxford University in the summer.
In the girls’ category, Chivenor emerged as champions, while our 鶹ý girls finished second. Their second place finish highlighted their commitment to the sport and their ability to work together. We are incredibly proud of both teams.
Well done to all three Griffin Schools!

…”Oh no he’s not!”
A group of actors from The Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton came to 鶹ýon Wednesday 18th October and Key Stage 2 had a wonderful time enjoying the story of Snow White through acting, singing and dancing. We had all the key elements of a pantomime – a beautiful princess and a charming prince, and of course a wicked witch!
Our pupils sat spellbound through the performance, booing the wicked witch and singing along to the songs! A huge thank you to the BPFA for inviting the actors into school to perform.

Year 4 were totally ‘wowed’ as they spent the day outside taking part in a carousel of activities to introduce them to their new topic, ‘The Attenborough Effect’, which is based on the work of David Attenborough, sustainability and climate change.

Our Griffins were Go-for-it Gorillas as they explored our Forest School area where they played a game of ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’, here children were given a range of scenarios and in their teams they had to decide and justify which ‘R’ it was – this produced many interesting discussions. In pairs, children then took part in a scavenger hunt and had to find lots of different things in the forest! Our Griffins then got dirty potting up all the plants that had sprouted from the seeds the whole school planted before the Easter holidays!

Children then littered the school field – yes, you read that correctly!! They discussed how seeing all this litter made them feel and the words ‘disgusting’, ‘gross’ and ‘angry’ were commonly mentioned. We then talked about the recycling bags that are used in Dudley homes, and recycled the litter into the appropriate bags before chatting about what happens to it once it is collected.

Their final task was taking part in an immersive Now Press Play experience where pupils were a child based in York. Their house flooded due to a river bursting their banks. They were saved by a climate scientist who was trying to prove climate change and together travelled around the world to prove it!Our Year 4 Griffins travelled to Australia to experience the bush fires, visited the Arctic to experience melting icebergs and rising sea levels before finally visiting Parliament to submit evidence to the politicians where they manage to win a vote in favour of banning fossil fuels in ten years’ time.

We all had so much fun, but also learnt so much!
