]]> After an exciting visit to Dudley Zoo and Castle, Year 1 returned to school full of ideas, ready to design and build their very own castle!

We began by learning about the different parts of a castle – from tall towers and turrets to moats and drawbridges. We looked closely at the features we saw at Dudley Castle and we got creative using cardboard, masking tape and paint.

Year 1 Griffins worked hard using teamwork, imagination and creativity. Well done for your fantastic effort!

From the battlements to the arrow slits and the remains of the moat or portcullis, we saw them all. Of course, we had lots of time to explore the zoo and see all the animals. A favourite of both staff and children were seeing the orangutans and meerkats!

]]> All the children in Years 1 and 2 made their annual journey to Bethlehem with the help from all the KS1 staff. This year, there was a particularly shiny retelling of this traditional Christmas story with lots of sparkle and enthusiasm. Once Mary and Joseph along with their trusty donkey had found a place to stay, after trying a number of inns, the twinkly stars led all the usual characters to the stable to meet baby Jesus.

The Kings were magnificent in their royal regalia as they handed over their gifts. The shepherds looked after their flock beautifully – the sheep were very well behaved and the angels were angelic (and also very sparkly). All the children were word perfect and sang and danced beautifully.

They have all worked very hard to learn their lines and looked wonderful in their costumes and Christmas jumpers – well done once again to everyone in Years 1 and 2 for all your hard work. “The Twinkly Nativity” certainly lived up to its name.

You all sparkled!

]]> Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside… On Thursday 20th June, Year 1 completed their topic “Hooray, we’re going on Holiday!” with a visit to Weston-Super-Mare!

Our young Griffins had so much fun, building sandcastles complete with flags, riding on the donkeys and enjoying an ice cream in the sunshine. A good time was certainly had by all, some even managed a little snooze on the coach home! We were so proud of how well our Griffins behaved. What a wonderful day!

]]> Our Year 1 children have been Slinky-Linky Snakes and have linked our GAF 2024 theme of ‘Energy’ with the scientific phenomenon of static electricity today. This is where there is an imbalance of electric charges within or on the surface of a material and the charge remains until it can be moved away by an electric current.
Our Exploring Elephants used it to make their butterflies’ wings flap (and to give themselves a wild hairdo!). From this amazing activity, our clever young griffins understand that electricity is energy and energy makes things move, grow or go.

]]> Something very egg-citing has been happening in Year 1 this April! The children spent two weeks observing the lifecycle of a chicken from an egg watching them grow into a chick.

We were lucky enough to watch them hatch from the egg in the incubator and go from fluffy bundle to cheeky chick over the following days. We kept a chick diary and recorded changes daily as well as being lucky enough to gently hold them.

Year 1 Griffins were delighted to look after the chicks and watch them grow!

]]> All the children in Years 1 and 2 made their way to Bethlehem this week with the help from all the Key Stage 1 staff. The “party sheep” visited Bethlehem looking for a big celebration and they certainly found one in the stable! Here the party sheep met with, innkeepers, citizens, servants,shepherds, kings, angels, camels a donkey and of course Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus who were in Bethlehem on Caeser’s instruction.

All the children worked very hard to learn their lines and all the words to the songs. They looked wonderful in their costumes and Christmas jumpers – well done everyone for all your hard work. A special well done to the narrators who helped the actors retell the Christmas story so well.

“Baarmy Bethlehem” was a great success!
