Pupils in Year 5 took part in a thoughtful PSHE session where we explored the theme of healthy relationships. We discussed the key elements that make a relationship positive and supportive, such as kindness, respect, honesty and good communication. The children then created eye-catching posters to show their understanding, demonstrating both creativity and maturity in their ideas.

We also continued our celebration of Black History Month by learning about the life and work of Maya Angelou. Inspired by this year’s theme – Standing Firm and in Power – we explored her powerful poem ‘Still I Rise’ and reflected on the importance of resilience and standing up for ourselves and others. The children then had a go at writing their own poems, which were full of emotion, strength, and creativity.

In our science lesson, Year 5 have been investigating what happens to dark, white, and milk chocolate when heated and cooled. Using their knowledge of reversible changes, the children observed how chocolate melts from a solid to a liquid when heated and then hardens again when cooled. They recorded how long each type took to melt and solidify, linking their science learning to a real-life, delicious example!

As a class, we discussed our key findings: white chocolate melted the fastest, followed by milk chocolate, with dark chocolate melting the slowest. We learned this is because white chocolate has more fat and fewer cocoa solids, causing it to melt quicker, while dark chocolate has more cocoa solids and melts more slowly. When cooled, dark chocolate solidified first, then milk chocolate, and white chocolate took the longest to harden. This showed us that chocolate with more cocoa solids solidifies faster than chocolate with more fat. Our Super Scientists showed great excitement and curiosity, making this a memorable and tasty science lesson!

Year 5 had an absolutely wonderful time exploring the world of art! We learned about the incredible ‘En Plein Air’ artist, Kittie Jones, who’s known for capturing the beauty of nature and the coast in her paintings. Inspired by her work, the children set off on their own artistic journey, creating stunning coastal landscapes.

Using a mix of media—including watercolours, oil pastels, and charcoal— our Griffins were able to bring their coastal visions to life in a beautiful way. The children applied their knowledge of mixed media techniques to experiment with different materials, creating vibrant, textured pieces that truly captured the essence of the coast.

Their engagement and focus were incredible, and we all had so much fun in the process!Ìý We can’t wait for the next lesson to keep exploring our artistic talents.

5 Anning become Meteorologists!

We have had an exciting start to the school year by stepping into the role of meteorologists! This week, they explored the difference between weather and climate, learning how each affects our daily lives and the world around us. ÌýUsing thermometers and anemometers, they measured real-time weather conditions around the school grounds—gathering data just like real scientists! It’s been a fantastic beginning to the year, filled with curiosity, hands-on learning, and teamwork.

We can’t wait to see what other adventures await Year 5 Anning as the year unfolds!

Year 5 Griffins kicked off our science topic ‘Changes of Materials and Their Properties’ with great enthusiasm! Our inquisitive Year 5’s explored how to separate mixtures using sieving, filtering, and magnetism. We had lots of fun making different mixtures and testing which methods worked best.

The class showed fantastic teamwork and curiosity as they shared and recorded their findings. A brilliant start to our science learning – well done, Super Scientists!

Our Year 5 Griffins dove headfirst into the fascinating world of World War II at Weston Park in June, exploring history through hands-on activities that truly brought the past to life.

They learned about rationing and its importance, discovering how Frederik Woolton’s scheme helped families during the war. The children bravely role-played as injured soldiers, working together to safely evacuate their comrades to the hospital. Another exciting challenge involved cracking wartime codes inspired by Alan Turing’s pioneering work. Teams raced through the orchard and maze—though a few delightfully got a little lost!

We also explored the significance of medals like the Victoria Cross, creating clay tributes to honour loved ones’ bravery. The afternoon was packed with outdoor fun, from toasting s’mores over the fire to carefully walking across a tightrope, building dens, making a variety of creative dishes in the mud kitchen, and hunting for insects and mini-beasts using nets and trays.

The children’s enthusiasm and excellent manners impressed all staff throughout the trip. It was wonderful to see them so engaged, learning, and enjoying every moment. We’re thrilled they had such a fun and memorable experience!

Our Year 5 Griffins had an exciting geography lesson, where we explored how the Sun moves across the sky throughout the day!

The children worked in teams and used a simple tool – a pencil – to measure the length of the shadow it cast at different times between 9:15am and 2:15pm. Every hour, we observed how the shadow changed in length, and the children did an excellent job using their observational and teamwork skills to record their findings.

Throughout the lesson, pupils learned that the Sun’s position in the sky changes as the Earth rotates. They discovered that the shadows were longest in the morning (at 9:15am) and in the afternoon (at 2:15pm), when the Sun is at its lowest point in the sky. This is because, at these times, the Sun is either rising in the East or setting in the West, casting longer shadows. At midday, the children observed that the shadow was shortest because the Sun was at its highest point in the sky, directly overhead, which created the smallest shadow.

It was a fantastic day of learning, and our great geographers really enjoyed seeing both physical geography and science in action as they worked together to understand the movement of the Sun. We look forward to more fun and learning in our next geography lesson!

As part of our science lesson learning about forces, 5 Anning have been investigating the effect that gravity has on different objects. They found out the gravity is a non-contact force: we cannot see gravity but can observe its effects.

To measure the force of gravity pulling on these objects, they used a weighing scale to measure its mass, then a newton metre to measure its weight.Ìý Fun fact: Mars has a much weaker gravitational pull than Earth, meaning objects would weigh less on this planet compared to Earth!

Our Griffins in 5 Newton had an amazing experience with a special visitor, Dr. Richard Greenwood during the first of many exciting sessions for our new science project, ‘Asteroids – Do Look Up.’

As part of this project, the children will become astronomers, exploring the world of meteorites, meteors, and asteroids through hands-on activities using high-tech cameras and telescopes. In the sessions, the children used their observation skills to examine meteorites provided by Dr. Greenwood, and they will continue to develop these skills throughout the project – observing meteors in the sky and collecting micrometeorites from their local environment.

This will help our super Year 5 scientists understand that space and astronomy are vast and far-reaching, yet also all around us. We can’t wait for the next session, where we will continue to explore the wonders of astronomy.

In January, Year 5 visited the National Space Centre in Leicester as part of our term’s topic! We began the day by touring the many interactive rooms, beginning with the Solar System and progressing through the Universe, Â鶹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø Planet and Into Space.

Following that, we went to the UK’s largest planetarium (the Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium). We were all astounded at the amount of effort, hard work and determination required to be an astronaut. Many of our ambitious Griffins left with dreams of becoming the next Tim Peake.

Later, we went to the famed Rocket Tower! This location houses Blue Streak and Thor Able rockets, the Gagarin Experience, Apollo Lunar Lander, and an actual Moon Rock! The four exhibition decks cover the Space Race, the history of rocketry, and Britain’s Space Race.

This extraordinary school excursion inspired the next generation of space scientists and engineers at Â鶹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø. We all had a wonderful day, and the children did an excellent job representing the school!

Well done, Year 5!
