Year 3 were invaded by the Romans with the help of ‘Primary History Workshops’!

Our Romans joined army battle formations, searched archaeology boxes, joined in Roman settlement quizzes, used artefact carousels, wore armour, tried on togas, played Roman games and trained as auxiliary archery soldiers! It was a very busy and active day!

Year 3 have been diving into the fascinating world of rocks and fossils as part of their science curriculum. Taking their learning outdoors, the children worked in groups to carry out hands-on investigations, testing the density, durability, and permeability of a variety of rock samples.

The fresh air and open space added to the excitement and curiosity as they explored the properties of different rocks through practical experiments. A fantastic way to bring science to life!

As part of their GAF 2024 work on the theme of ‘Energy’, Year 3 had explored the work of Andy Goldsworth, an artist who uses the natural resources around him to create pieces of art work.

This week they have explored the scientific concept of photosynthesis – how plants transform light energy into chemical energy and have used leaves from our local environment to create rubbings and prints. They have been so excited to share their arts work as staff have visited their classroom and have truly been Go-for-it Gorillas in all of their GAF 2024 work.

Year 3 have been out and about, using our local environment of Wren’s Nest Nature Reserve to explore the different types of rock there and to search for fossils. The visit was an excellent end to their scientific topic of rocks and fossils.

Our Griffins were Exploring Elephants and I Know Rhinos and listened intently to their guide. They were engaged, interested and motivated to learn. They were also thrilled that they could bring back some of the fossils they had found to share with friends and family.

Our Year 3 Griffins recently visited Dudley Museum at the Archives to complete our Science topic, exploring rocks and fossils.

Pupils were ‘Concentrating Crocodiles’ and showed their ‘I Know Rhino’ skills in the discussions, sharing their knowledge about fossils and Mary Anning – a fossil collector and palaeontologist born in 1799.

In the afternoon, there was an opportunity to develop their independence skills, choosing from a variety of fossil activities andÌý exploring the historical museum artefacts and dinosaur exhibits.

Well done, Year 3!

On Tuesday 4th June, Year 3 visited Father Gary at St. Chad’s Church to find out more about the Christian faith. Father Gary talked to them about how he came to be a priest, different aspects of the church and different roles that he has within it.
The children really enjoyed looking at the various areas of the church such as the font, the Ladies Chapel and the lectern. We had a tour around the church to get a closer look at the beautiful art work, stained glass windows and the statues of religious figures.
Some of the children had a chance to try on some of Father Gary’s vestments, in which he delivers his Sunday services, weddings, funerals and services for different Christian festivals.
Our Griffins had a wonderful time discovering more about our beautiful, local church and we hope to see Father Gary very soon!

On Thursday 6th June, our Year 3 Griffins transformed into Romans! With many in awesome costumes, Year 3 had a great Wow day start to our Romans Creative Curriculum theme.

We explored Celtic life and were Creative Chameleons when we made models of roundhouses – buildings which the Romans lived in after they invaded Britain. They brilliantly re-enacted the story of Boudicca and her Celtic revolt against the invading Romans!

We all had a fabulous day and look forward to the Primary History Workshop taking place next month. Well done Year 3!

In 3 Hepworth, their current topic is the fall of Pompeii. During English, our Griffins have started looking at writing a newspaper report about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. They have played the role of newspaper reporters interviewing people about what had happened in the surrounding area.
3 Hepworth have also learned about a game that children in Pompeii used to play called Knucklebones. It was a game of skill played using the knucklebones of sheep and pigs. However, they enjoyed playing the game using dice instead!

On Wednesday 6th December, our Year 3 and 4 Griffins took part in a football competition at Perry Wood, where Â鶹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø, Chivenor, and Perry Wood themselves showcased their young talent. Both boys and girls teams from each school participated, creating a great platform for the students to display their skills and love for the game.
Â鶹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø boys won their tournament by working well together and showing skill and determination. They played smart and celebrated their win with lots of energy, proving they were not just good individually, but also as a team. As a result of their win, the boys have now qualified to play at the GST national finals at Oxford University in the summer.
In the girls’ category, Chivenor emerged as champions, while our Â鶹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø girls finished second. Their second place finish highlighted their commitment to the sport and their ability to work together. We are incredibly proud of both teams.
Well done to all three Griffin Schools!
