Exploring in Forest School

Each week, our Year 2 Griffins have the opportunity to be Exploring Elephants by taking part in Forest School. Whether it’s sitting around the fire, climbing trees, finding bugs and creatures or creating a mudslide, whatever the weather our griffins never shy away from getting outdoors!

So far this year, children have learnt all about fire safety and what contributes to creating a fire, why some holly leaves are spikey and others are round and have even had a go at waking up the trees after winter!

Well done, Year 2!

The Twinkly Nativity

All the children in Years 1 and 2 made their annual journey to Bethlehem with the help from all the KS1 staff. This year, there was a particularly shiny retelling of this traditional Christmas story with lots of sparkle and enthusiasm. Once Mary and Joseph along with their trusty donkey had found a place to stay, after trying a number of inns, the twinkly stars led all the usual characters to the stable to meet baby Jesus.

The Kings were magnificent in their royal regalia as they handed over their gifts. The shepherds looked after their flock beautifully – the sheep were very well behaved and the angels were angelic (and also very sparkly). All the children were word perfect and sang and danced beautifully.

They have all worked very hard to learn their lines and looked wonderful in their costumes and Christmas jumpers – well done once again to everyone in Years 1 and 2 for all your hard work. “The Twinkly Nativity” certainly lived up to its name.

You all sparkled!

Year 2 Sleepover

On Friday 5^th July, all the Year 2 Griffins were invited to stay for a sleepover at school.�� They could choose to stay all night and sleep in the classrooms; or they could stay until bedtime and go home. Most of the children decided to stay even though some were a little worried.

At home time, Year 2 waited until all the other children had gone home, then they had a playtime and a snack on the playground.�� It was a little strange having the whole school to themselves.

After playtime, pupils who were sleeping over excitedly collected their pillows, sleeping bags and overnight bags from the café.�� Some children wanted to put their pyjamas on straight away, but first, it was time for Forest School activities. Children enjoyed playing games and taking part in outdoor activities before getting ready go to the hall for our Mexican inspired tea.

The Mexican tea was delicious!�� The children and staff enjoyed: tortillas with chicken strips, nachos with a variety of Mexican dips, corn on the cob, fried potatoes and finished the meal with churros and ice cream.�� Later, we spent time with Mr Gunn, as he reminded everyone about fire safety rules and, after having a mindful moment in front of the campfire, everyone toasted a brioche bun. Another short playtime on the field followed to help the children use up all their spare energy.

Next, came the most exciting part of our sleepover, setting up the beds and getting washed and ready for bed.�� A few bedtime stories helped everyone settle down for sleep, although it was difficult to fall asleep when you are sleeping in a strange room with all your friends.�� The staff are not too sure how much sleeping went on and a few children missed their families, but a good time was had by all!

Breakfast time arrived all too soon and then it was time to get dressed and get ready to go home.�� Well done Year 2!

Year 2 Visit to Conkers

On Monday 3rd June, our Griffins in Year 2 went on a wonderful adventure to in Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Conkers is a family-friendly centre in the National Forest with play areas, discovery zones and even an amphitheatre.

The children and staff arrived at the centre to shouts of delight! Everyone alighted from the coach and walked to the reception area. After a quick stop to leave bags and coats all were off to start an amazing adventure. During the day, children experienced a squelchy (and cold!) barefoot walk, wobbly bridges, the activity trail and an exciting talk by a warden about seed dispersal.

Everybody learned how seeds are transported and identified how different seeds are dispersed in different ways. Did you know that some seeds explode from their seed pods? Some are transported by animals and birds, and some by wind and water.

Everyone also enjoyed a ride on the train which was very exciting! Later, some of the children experienced the 4D cinema and discovered how to look after the animals and plants in our environment and how to make sure we don’t pollute our wonderful world – a useful lesson for us all.

Everyone represented �鶹��ý�� exceptionally well and all were very well behaved. The same can’t be said of the geese who tried to eat our lunch forcing us to eat indoors!

Baarmy Bethlehem

All the children in Years 1 and 2 made their way to Bethlehem this week with the help from all the Key Stage 1 staff.�� The “party sheep” visited Bethlehem looking for a big celebration and they certainly found one in the stable! Here the party sheep met with, innkeepers, citizens, servants,��shepherds, kings, angels, camels a donkey and of course Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus who were in Bethlehem on Caeser’s instruction.

All the children worked very hard to learn their lines and all the words to the songs.�� They looked wonderful in their costumes and Christmas jumpers – well done everyone for all your hard work.�� A special well done to the narrators who helped the actors retell the Christmas story so well.

“Baarmy Bethlehem” was a great success!

Perspective Photography

During our GAF weeks at �鶹��ý��, we explored a wide variety of arts activities and developed a range of skills. Year 2 have been learning about perspective photography. After looking at some very clever photographs, our Griffins were Exploring Elephants and worked with their friends to devise their own ideas for perspective photographs. How amazing are these?

Poncho Technology Project

All the children in Year 2 have been studying Mexico and it’s culture over the last term.�� For their summer technology project, they designed and made a Mexican poncho with applique detail.

Some of our Griffins designed a poncho with simple Mexican patterns and some made really intricate designs featuring pictures of dogs, cats and even a mermaid! All the completed ponchos are brilliant and the teddies certainly look good in them!

Well done Year 2 for your excellent designs and excellent making skills!

A Sunny Celebration

All the staff at �鶹��ý��, especially the Year 2 Team, would like to say a big well done to all of our Year 2 Griffins who have worked so hard on their SATs.�� We could not be more proud of each and every one of them.

To celebrate, we all enjoyed an afternoon in the sunshine with a cooling ice lolly.

Year 2 Fly to Mexico

This week, all of the Year 2 Griffins travelled via “�鶹��ý�� Airlines” to Mexico.�� The pupils lined up in class with their hand luggage and passports and walked down to the hall.�� There they were met by Passport Control, who checked their documents and gave them their boarding passes. Cabin crew then directed the excited travellers to their seats.�� The AeroMexico safety video was watched carefully and then we were off!�� Soon we were above the clouds, then, in no time at all, Mexico City was in sight.

The view of Mexico City from the air was spectacular and we could spot amazing buildings and even a football stadium!��

After a short tour of Mexico City with Barnaby Bear it was time to return to �鶹��ý��.�� The return journey was made even better as Cabin Crew brought treats from the trolley.�� What an amazing visit we had!

Travelling Back in Time

Our Year 2 Griffins went back to 1666 last week.�� They watched as Mr Siviter recreated the Great Fire of London on the school field using the models the children made in class.�� The fire started (just as it did in 1666) in the bakery and spread along Pudding Lane.�� The fire spread really quickly because the houses were very close together and the wind was blowing.�� The children were amazed at just how quickly the fire spread.
