For our final Griffin Science Symposium 2022 post, we are going to share the fun and the learning our youngest children in Nursery have been exploring this week. They have been extremely busy conducting lots of experiments with fizzy colours, paper towels to mix colours, and even making ‘explosions’ with coke and mentoes. They learnt about floating and sinking, and were creative chameleons and awesome artists by using symmetry to produce beautiful butterflies. We are very proud of the youngest learners in our 鶹ý family!

What a busy day of scientific learning we have had at 鶹ý!

Year 3 have been looking at the life cycle of a flowering plant. They concentrated on seed dispersal using wind and tried to make sycamore seeds to catch the breeze. It was super breezy so they span and flew really well. Some children even tried launching them like the bursting style plants for a bit of extra oomph!

Year 6 have also joined with their Year 6 Griffin companions across the country to test how craters are made on the moon. They tested a variety of meteors (‘impactors’) to identify the length and depth the craters made, and whether the size and mass of the meteor had an effect on the crater caused. Of course, we completed the experiment as a fair test to ensure our results were accurate.

Year 6’s Griffin Science Symposium 2022 has started with an inspiring and informative talk from our key note speaker, Dr. Anne Edwards from the John Innes Institute, and other speakers, discussing their important work in STEM. The children listened as they described their work with NASA, robotics and plant growth, and how they are bringing about change in our world. Did you know that a robot is travelling to Mercury? Did you know scientists are trying to remove toxins from grass peas? And, did you know that robots can do lots of jobs, but they can’t be teachers!

Year 2 Mozart have explored John McAdam and discovered that his experiments with different materials changed the ways roads are built today.  They drew some cross section diagrams to show how John Mc Adam’s roads were constructed.

Year 2 Glennie were slinky linkys and linked GSS and International Women’s Day, finding out about Dr Jane Goodall and the impact that she had had on discoveries and conservation whilst working with Chimpanzees.

It’s lovely to see your amazing work, Year 2, you should be very proud!
