We are saddened to hear of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and our thoughts are with her family during this time. Our family of schools will be marking her loyal service over the coming weeks as we enter a national period of mourning. Queen Elizabeth II was a much loved and respected sovereign who reigned for 70 years, longer than any other monarch in British history. She has been a constant in everyone’s lives and her service will not be forgotten.

It may be nearly the end of term but we continue to broaden our Griffins’ horizons and help them to widen their art knowledge. Year 6 visited the New Art Gallery in Walsall and explored some breath-taking and thought-provoking pieces of art. The first display we viewed was a selection of art exploring the year 2020 and the major events that took place, and the pieces really encouraged the children to share their thoughts about what they saw and recognise how powerful art can be to share a message.  Even a picture that just said, “Stop doing stupid things” inspired Thomas to say, “It’s amazing how four words can have such meaning.”

We also explored landscapes and sculptures, met several of the artists and even became weather forecast reporters, using pictures of flowers as our inspiration. The children also enjoyed exploring the floor with art works for sale. We weren’t sure about the dustcart on sale for £19,000! It certainly got us talking!

And so the Griffin Arts Festival Birmingham 2022 has come to an end.
After a very busy day in Birmingham, our Griffins all changed into their smart clothes and sat down to the Birmingham “Last Night of the Proms”. The proms began with the announcement of who had won the Music Medals, Monologues and Poster Competition…more of that in the next post.
A local brass band, Ratby Co-operative Band, played a selection of pieces of music, many that were familiar to us, and we waved our flags with fervour! Then, the children finished the evening by sharing some musical performances with their Griffin friends, a lovely way to end the proms.
It has been a memorable celebration of the arts and the children have been privileged to take part in a variety of arts activities, and they have done this with confidence and with enthusiasm. Miss Copson, Miss Buirch and Mrs Taylor have been privileged too to be able to share this wonderful event with our children.
Next week, we will share our school-based GAF activities…and we have so much to share with our Griffin families!

Despite being very tired, our Birmingham GAF residential griffins were up bright and early and excited to be going home after what has been a truly memorable few days. However first they had to overcome the challenge of having to pack their suitcases and sleeping bags!

After a lovely breakfast, the rest of the morning was spent finishing off activities for the arts award before departing.

Thank you NCS for hosting a wonderful Birmingham GAF residential.

Our Birmingham GAF griffins have spent the morning at the stunning Symphony Hall in Birmingham. Lots of fun was had during the samba activity, where the griffins developed skills in body percussion to create their own music.

Griffins also explored how to expand their vocal range using a number of exercises as part of a jazz workshop.

Our final workshop for Tuesday had a drama focus and was delivered by ‘Oddsocks’, a company who aim to tell good stories in a fun, informative way; gently challenging people’s perceptions and the way in which they react to theatre…
